1. 3rd Capital Link, Cyprus Business Forum - April 4, 2025 - New York

The 3rd Capital Link Cyprus Business Forum was held with great success on Friday, April 4th, 2025, at the Metropolitan Club in New York City.

Organised in cooperation with the Cyprus Union of Shipowners (CUS) and supported by the Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus and Invest Cyprus - CIPA, the Forum aimed to elevate Cyprus’s profile within the USA investment and business community and spotlight the country’s growing role as a hub for investment and economic activity.

The event brought together a distinguished delegation of Cypriot government officials and leading figures from the private and banking sector to address key topics, including security and stability, energy, cyber technology, banking and finance, and shipping. 

Keynote speaker at the Forum was H.E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, whilst prominent Cyprus Ministers, such as the Minister of Energy, Commerce & Industry, Mr. Giorgos Papanastasiou, the Shipping Deputy Minister to the President, Mrs. Marina Hadjimanolis, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation & Digital Policy, Mr. Nicodemos Damianou, as well as the Governor of Central Bank of Cyprus, Dr. Chris Patsalides delivered speeches in the areas of their responsibilities. Their presence underscored the Forum’s significance in promoting Cyprus on the global stage.

The panel discussions focused on issues such as the Status of Cyprus in the broader east Mediterranean area, the Benefits of the recent upgrade of Cyprus economy by rating agencies , the Financial growth of Cyprus economy, the Research for oil and gas in the Cyprus Economic Zone, the Benefits that a company enjoys when establishing operations in Cyprus, the Close Relationship with USA, and the Cyprus as a Technology Gateway to Europe, Middle East, North Africa and India. With a dynamic maritime cluster, a competitive tonnage tax system, and a commitment to sustainable and digital transformation, Cyprus remains a top destination for global shipping.

The CUS delegation was led by President, Mr. Andreas Hadjiyiannis; Vice President, Mr. Polys V. Hajioannou, accompanied by family members; Vice President, Mr. Zacharias Zachariou; family members of the Vice President, Mr. George Mouskas, Mr. Zen Mouskas and Ms. Irene Mouskas. Their presence as major Cyprus-flag shipowners testifies the strength and resilience of Cyprus Shipping and the dynamism and prospect of the Cypriot registry.

The President and Vice President of our Union, Messrs. Andreas Hadjiyiannis and Polys Hajioannou, participated in a dedicated panel discussion titled "Cyprus - A Global Shipping & Shipmanagement Hub", which featured in-depth discussions on fleet competitiveness amid the energy transition, environmental regulations, and discussed possible effects on the market of recent tariffs imposed by US administration. The panel captivated the audience with its engaging dialogue and emphasized the maritime sector’s importance and competitiveness at both European and international levels. 

The forum’s luncheon was sponsored by the Cyprus Union of Shipowners, thanks to the funding of its executive committee members President, Andreas Hadjiyiannis, and the Vice Presidents, Polys Hajioannou, George Mouskas and Mouskas' family, Zacharias Zachariou and Nicole Mylona. 

During his Introductory Address at the Luncheon, Mr. Hadjiyiannis emphasized Cyprus’s role as a dynamic maritime nation with global strategic relevance, a pro-business climate, and robust ties with the U.S. Highlighting innovation, sustainability, and quality of life, he presented Cyprus as a premier investment destination linking Europe with global markets. He also spotlighted the country’s commitment to green transformation and digitalization, positioning the maritime industry as a key player in this evolution. Furthermore, he addressed Cyprus’s early warnings regarding global over-reliance on China’s shipbuilding industry, advocating for diversified and secure maritime infrastructure and promoting strategic autonomy and resilience in global trade.

At the end of the forum the delegation moved to Wall Street where Safebulkers Inc. hosted a special ceremony where the President of the Republic of Cyprus rang the Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange.  

Mr. Polys Hajioannou, Chairman and CEO of Safe Bulkers, was joined by H.E. Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, along with members of Cypriot government, members of the Company’s Board of Directors and other distinguished members  of the business community. The event underscores the successful pathway of Safe Bulkers in the NYSE since 2008, the ten years anniversary of Company’s operations in the Republic of Cyprus and the progress and attractiveness of Cyprus as business destination hub in Eastern Mediterranean.

Mr. Hajioannou, said, “We are proud to celebrate the ten year relocation of our headquarters  in the Republic of Cyprus by ringing together with H.E. President Christodoulides the closing bell at New York Stock Exchange within the context of the 3rd Capital Link Cyprus Business Forum, taking place on Friday, April 4th, 2025, at the Metropolitan Club in New York City”. 

The evening before the Forum, a formal Speaker's dinner was hosted at the prestigious New York Yacht Club, sponsored by Safe Bulkers Inc. The gathering included H.E. President Christodoulides, the Governor of Central Bank of Cyprus, government Ministers, shipowners, the CEO’s of all three major Cyprus Banks, the CEO of Piraeus Bank, Mr. Christos Megalou, and distinguished businessmen such as John Catsimatides, John Coumantaros, Peter Georgiopoulos as well as Congressman, Mr. Lance Gooden and his wife Alexa.

In his keynote address during the Speaker’s Dinner, President Christodoulides underlined that the delegation's visit to the U.S. was aimed at positioning Cyprus as an attractive investment destination. He remarked, "It is fair to say that we all have at least two things in common: love of Cyprus and shipping. And we all know for a fact that when these two join forces, well – we make waves." Moreover, he added, "We also know all too well that geography is destiny. And yet, how we navigate that destiny is up to us. Cyprus’ geographic location between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa renders Cyprus a natural bridge, a point of reference in fostering connections between people and countries driven by a shared vision for security, prosperity, and innovation."
