1. European Commission faces ECJ lawsuit for adding shipping and aviation to green taxonomy

Environmental campaigners have filed a lawsuit against the European Union over its inclusion of polluting planes and ships powered by fossil fuels in the bloc’s green investment rulebook.

The non-profits — which include legal groups Dryade, Opportunity Green, CLAW and campaign groups Fossielvrij NL and Protect our Winters Austria, filed their lawsuit before the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on the 27th August 2024 and state that allowing ships and planes running on fossil fuels to be aligned with the taxonomy, through “weak efficiency criteria”, undermines the whole purpose of the mechanism.

A hearing on the case is expected during the first half of 2025.

The EU Commission did not respond to a request for comment.
