1. Thalassa 2024 Festival
On Saturday, 19 October 2024, Cyprus celebrated its rich maritime heritage with the Thalassa 2024 Festival, for the fourth consecutive year. Marine culture remains a vital part of the island's identity, history, and economy.
Our Union played a key role as a major participant and supporter of this event, which was co-organized by the Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry and the Limassol Municipality.
The festival brought together 40 organizations and other entities, offering an engaging maritime experience that highlighted the significance of shipping, the value of the blue economy, marine environmental protection and the benefits of participating in the maritime sector.
The event was officially inaugurated by the Shipping Deputy Minister, Mrs. Marina Hadjimanoli. The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Christos Stylianides attended the event, emphasizing the shared commitment of Cyprus and Greece to the shipping sector.
A standout feature of the event was the exhibit of the Cyprus Union of Shipowners which captured the attention of the participants. A video presentation was showcased, featuring short interviews with members of the CUS Executive Committee and videos of vessel masters and officers. The video- presentation promoted the Cyprus Flag and Registry while also highlighted CUS role as a leading ambassador of Cyprus shipping.
Safe Bulkers, led by its CEO and Vice President of our Union, Mr. Polys V. Hajioannou, joined the exhibition stand. Safe Bulkers continues its efforts to strengthen the specialized workforce within Cyprus's maritime cluster by presenting its 5th Annual Scholarship Program. The program aims to attract more high school graduates to pursue shipping-related university studies.
Visitors to the festival had the opportunity to learn about the scholarship offerings and gather information about shipping studies for the 2025-2026 academic period, continuing its commitment to corporate social responsibility.

2. The Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Limassol holds 2024 Keynote Annual Event
On Thursday, 17 October, the first Keynote Annual Event of the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Limassol, was held successfully at the Four Seasons Hotel in Limassol, with 200 members and guests in attendance.
The 2024 Keynote Annual Event brought together esteemed dignitaries, including, the Attorney General, George L. Savvides, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giorgos Papanastasiou, the Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Cyprus and Honorary President of the Club, Julie D. Fisher, the Shipping Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Marina Hadjimanolis, the Cyprus Navy Commander, Commodore Minas Solomonides, the Commander of Port & Marine Police Unite, Cyprus Police, Michalis Katsounotos, the Head of Limassol Port Police Station, Act. Chief Inspector Andreas Hatziioannou and the President of the International Propeller Club, Port of Piraeus, Costis Frangoulis.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Polys V. Hajioannou, Vice President of the Union and President of the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Limassol. He paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of the illegal Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation of Cyprus, presenting a moving documentary that recounted the tragic events of 1974.
The evening’s keynote speaker was Robert D. Kaplan, a best-selling American author of twenty-two books on foreign affairs and the Robert Strausz-Hupé Chair in Geopolitics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia.
Mr. Kaplan delivered a compelling speech titled “A World in Turbulent Crisis: From the Globe Down to the Region.” He provided an in-depth analysis of the current global geopolitical landscape, covering regions such as China, the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, Europe, Africa, and the United States. Kaplan also offered valuable insights into the Cyprus issue, focusing on the roles and influences of Greece, the United Nations, and the Great Powers in shaping potential solutions.
